We came to Roka in Charlotte street because our first stint here had us intrigued. We found / stumbled upon it earlier this year whilst exploring our beloved London. We stopped for a wine spritzer, the place had such a good vibe (maybe because the sun was out?) and our waitress was lovely. We vowed to come back again and try some of the food. Fast forward to winter and here we are – trying out a sushi taster menu?! If I am sounding surprised, it is because, I AM!

Quick back story, my Neal is not too keen on fish and his past sushi experiences have left him a little wary. My mission has been to change his perception by taking him to the less commercial sushi places and eating ‘proper’ sushi and voila! We have graduated to a taster menu. If any of you have tried sushi before, it is typically a selection of small dishes – sachimi, nigiri, maki, temaki et al. You can have as little as 4 or as many as your stomach can take, essentially work your way through lol.

Our tokujo menu was 14 courses paired with wine and sake. It seriously was the most pimped out aka premium sushi I have had. The chefs here are doing the most with sushi – we had sushi with black truffle, oscietra caviar, scallops, black cod, crab and crayfish dumplings! I was like whaattttt ! The menu was not only fish, we also had miso which came with tender stem broccoli and ginger. The meat section of the menu – kanoku fu kohitsuji was lamb cutlets with Korean spice, the tokujou wagyu to kinoto? – a 100g of pure breed Japanese wagyu served with eryngil mushrooms and wasabi ponzu sauce was the daddy! Yep! I totally get what the hype is about, it was incredibly full of flavour and tender, I mean melt-in-your-mouth tender! It was deliciously scrumptious!  The dessert platter was literally the icing on the cake. It was a selection of fruit, sorbets and ice cream served on a bowl of shaved ice and warm chocolate brownie. Listen! These guys were not playing!

The tokujo taster menu is truly a delight, the open kitchen and being able to see the chefs hard at work makes the experience adds to the whole vibe.
